Disability Coverage
A Safety Net for Unanticipated Events
Even when you take precautions, sometimes you can still encounter unexpected illnesses or injuries. To help you cope with the unexpected, BWH® Hotels offers two types of disability coverage through UNUM: Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD).
Short Term Disability (STD)
BWH Hotels provides Basic Short-Term Disability (STD) coverage to support you when you’re unable to work for more than seven consecutive days due to a non-work-related illness or injury.
What You Receive
-
Weekly Benefit: Up to 60% of your base weekly earnings, capped at $2,309 per week
-
Maximum Duration: Benefits may continue for up to 26 weeks
-
Eligibility: You become eligible for STD benefits after 180 days of employment
When STD Benefits Begin and End
STD benefits typically begin after a 7-day elimination period and will end when one of the following occurs:
-
You are no longer considered disabled under the plan,
-
You reach the 26-week maximum benefit period, or
-
You pass away
Short Term Disability (STD) Buy-Up
You can purchase additional STD coverage that allows you to receive a benefit of 70 percent of your base weekly earnings at the time you become disabled, with a maximum benefit of $2,500 per week. If you are electing STD Buy-Up for the first time, a pre-existing condition limitation exists.
STD Exclusions
BWH Hotel’s STD plan excludes disabilities resulting from certain causes, such as the commission of a felony, military service, war, self-inflicted injuries, and work-related injuries.
Additionally, STD buy-up insurance will not cover any period of disability which begins in the first 12 months after your effective date if it is caused by, contributed to, or results from a pre-existing condition.
Long Term Disability (LTD)
BWH Hotels provides Basic Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage to protect your income if you become totally disabled and are unable to work for an extended period of time.
What You Receive
-
Monthly Benefit: Up to 60% of your base monthly earnings, capped at $10,000 per month
-
Eligibility: You become eligible for LTD benefits after 180 days of employment
-
When Benefits Begin: LTD benefits begin after a 6-month elimination period (also known as a waiting period)
The elimination period is the amount of time you must be continuously disabled, as defined by the plan, before benefits begin.
When LTD Benefits End
LTD benefits will end when one of the following occurs:
-
You are no longer considered disabled under the plan,
-
You reach the LTD benefit duration limit (typically your Social Security Normal Retirement Age), or
-
You pass away
LTD Exclusions
BWH Hotel’s LTD plan excludes disabilities resulting from certain causes, such as the commission of a felony, military service, war, or self-inflicted injuries. Additionally, the LTD Plan will not cover any period of disability which begins in the first 12 months after your effective date if it is caused by, contributed to, or results from a pre-existing condition.
